Getting There

Plan your journey to Jökulsárlón before choosing a cave departure. Compare self-drive travel and Reykjavík transport, choose a sensible overnight base and leave time for check-in.

Journey at a glance

Work backwards: an example

If your voucher requires arrival at 09:40 and your current route estimate is 60 minutes, 08:40 is the departure time before any buffer. Leave earlier to allow for road conditions, stops and finding your operator. This is a calculation example, not a recommended winter driving schedule.

The journey comes first

Choose your transport

To visit the Crystal Ice Cave, first plan your journey to Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon. Most local tours featured here start at the lagoon; the Reykjavík package includes the longer South Coast journey. Neither should be confused with driving directly to a cave entrance.

01 · Your own itinerary

Drive yourself

Choose a local departure when you have arranged your own road travel. You decide where to stay and when to stop; the operator handles the booked glacier approach.

02 · Transport included

Join from Reykjavík

Choose the two-day South Coast option when you need transport from the capital. Check the pickup instructions and what the package includes before booking.

03 · A shorter morning

Stay in the region

An overnight stop nearer the lagoon can make an early departure more practical. Plan the next night too, especially when continuing along the coast.

Build a workable day

Work back from check-in

Your tour’s departure time is not the time to arrive in the parking area. Read the required check-in time in your confirmation, then work backwards to decide when to leave your accommodation.

1

Check-in time

Use the operator’s arrival allowance, not a general figure copied from another tour.

2

Road journey

Plan the current route from your actual overnight address to the confirmed departure area.

3

Stops and buffer

Allow for meals, fuel or charging, winter conditions and finding the correct guide.

4

Previous night

If the resulting morning is unrealistic, choose a closer base or a different departure.

Leave room in the day, not just in the driving estimate. The journey back, the tour itself and the next hotel check-in all belong in the same plan.

For the local arrival map, parking areas and finding your operator, use Location and Directions. This guide focuses on getting you to that area.

Approaching from the west

From Reykjavík

The South Coast route is a substantial journey before the glacier activity begins. Follow Route 1 through the Vík and Skaftafell areas toward Jökulsárlón.

Give the drive its own space

Do not treat an early local tour as a short excursion from the capital. Start with a current road route for your accommodation and travel date, then add stops and allow for the conditions.

For an early departure, stay in Southeast Iceland the previous night or choose the guided Reykjavík package. A map estimate is not a promise that the same journey will be practical in winter.

Avoid filling the outward drive with timed sightseeing stops. Keep optional stops flexible so one delay does not make the rest of the day unworkable.

Match the tour to your route

From Vík or Kirkjubæjarklaustur

Both are western bases on a South Coast itinerary. Neither is beside the lagoon, so consider the remaining drive before choosing a morning tour.

Starting in Vík

Continue east toward the glacier region. Plan the travel day around the cave booking instead of assuming you can fit every South Coast stop into the same morning.

Starting in Kirkjubæjarklaustur

You are further along the eastbound journey, but still need to reach Jökulsárlón. Check the route from the actual property, particularly when staying outside the settlement.

A later departure may fit a west-to-east travel day more comfortably. That is an itinerary choice, not a reason to continue driving if conditions become unsuitable.

For a very early tour, compare overnight bases nearer Jökulsárlón before fixing the rest of your accommodation.

The glacier region

From Skaftafell or Öræfi

The Skaftafell and Öræfi area is a western glacier-region base. For the local products featured here, continue to the departure area specified at Jökulsárlón. Staying near one glacier activity does not put you at every other tour’s meeting point.

Before leavingWhat to check
Your accommodationUse the property’s full address when planning the route, not only the regional name.
Your activityMatch the product name and operator to the confirmation. “Vatnajökull” can describe activities in different visitor areas.
Your next bookingDo not schedule another fixed activity using the cave tour’s advertised duration alone. Allow for the return and road journey.

The Vatnajökull guide explains the different visitor areas. Use Location and Directions for the final arrival reference.

Approaching from the east

From Höfn

Höfn is east of Jökulsárlón. Plan the westbound journey to the lagoon, then consider whether you will return east or continue west after the activity.

Confirm the departure

A booking website may list “Höfn” as the destination while the tour instructions specify Jökulsárlón. Use the actual meeting instructions, not the category in the web address.

Plan the onward drive

Include the trip after the cave in your day. Check the next accommodation’s arrival arrangements and leave time for a meal or any sightseeing you keep in the plan.

Whether coming from Höfn or the west, the same rule applies: reach the confirmed check-in point with time to find the right operator.

Your car stops at the public arrival area

Road travel and glacier access

A modified four-wheel-drive vehicle beside a glacier.

Two different parts of the trip

Your rental car gets you to the specified public arrival area. The local tours in this collection include specialist transport for their glacier approach, followed by the guided walking route.

Do not follow a departing tour vehicle, an old cave coordinate or an unofficial route beyond public access. The visible cave opening is not a normal road destination.

Choose the car for the road conditions

Check the rental vehicle and winter equipment against your planned journey. Safetravel’s winter-driving guidance notes that four-wheel drive can help in some conditions but does not remove the risk of skidding on ice.

A vehicle that can reach the lagoon does not give you independent access to the glacier. For the guided part, read Safety and What to Wear.

Before departure

Check the whole route

Check more than the weather outside your hotel. Look at the road journey, the forecast for when you will travel and any travel alerts before leaving. A tour booking is not a reason to drive through unsuitable conditions.

Before you leave

Your travel checklist

If disruption affects your arrival, contact the operator when safely stopped. Read the booking’s late-arrival and cancellation terms rather than assuming that a road delay is covered by the operator’s weather-cancellation policy.

The last part of the journey

When you reach Jökulsárlón

Follow the latest parking and check-in instructions. Several operators use the same general area, and a lagoon visit or a stop at Diamond Beach is not the same as arriving at your guide’s vehicle.

Before the tour

Allow time to park, use the facilities and locate your operator. Do not assume the cave ticket includes parking charges; check the booking and current visitor-area instructions.

After the tour

Leave the lagoon and beach sightseeing flexible around the actual return. This is usually less rushed than trying to visit both before a fixed departure.

Need the map, GPS or check-in details?

Use the dedicated arrival guide rather than navigating to a cave pin.

For the visit itself, the Jökulsárlón guide separates the lagoon, coastal stop and other local activities.

Match the booking to the transport

Without a rental car

The two-day South Coast tour includes transport from Reykjavík. Check the exact pickup location, room arrangement, luggage allowance and return arrangements for your booking. A short tour departing at Jökulsárlón does not include that capital-to-lagoon journey.

Book the complete journey

A Reykjavík package connects the South Coast transport with the activity. Confirm what is included rather than buying a local cave departure and assuming pickup can be added.

Check both bus journeys

For independent public transport, use Strætó’s route planner and timetables for your exact date. Check the arrival stop, onward connection and return journey before relying on a service.

A “near public transportation” label is not a confirmed connection with your departure. No particular bus, fare or same-day return is promised here. For a separately arranged transfer, confirm the collection point and journey back in writing.

FAQ

Where should I drive for a local tour?

To the public arrival point specified by your operator, usually in the Jökulsárlón area for the local products featured here. Use your current confirmation and the Location and Directions guide, not an ice-cave coordinate.

Can I do this as a day trip from Reykjavík?

Treat the whole return journey and the cave activity as one plan. An early local departure is generally better paired with an overnight stay in Southeast Iceland. The Reykjavík package is a separate multi-day option.

Is a Skaftafell booking the same as a Jökulsárlón booking?

No. Check the actual operator, product and departure instructions. The name Vatnajökull refers to a wider glacier region and does not establish one shared check-in point.

Does a local tour collect me from my hotel?

Do not assume it does. The local products expect you at their stated departure area. Any hotel pickup or separately arranged transfer must be confirmed for that exact booking.

Can I use a bus to reach my cave departure?

Only rely on public transport after checking the exact date, arrival stop, connection time and journey back. This page does not establish that a timetable fits a particular cave tour.

What if I cannot reach the departure safely?

Do not rush or take an unofficial glacier route. Contact the operator when safely stopped and ask about the options under your booking terms. Your inability to arrive and the operator cancelling are different situations.
